All courses are taught by qualified professionals from the CEESI staff and special guest lecturers from the various flow measurement industries. Students find a unique opportunity to interact with individuals from a cross-section of the industry including natural gas, petroleum, automotive, aerospace, health care, process control, power and utilities, and the petrochemical fields.

This course is designed for:
  • Technicians
  • Non-Engineers
We place a lot of emphasis on basic flow phenomena such as:
  • Relationship between pressure drop and flowrate
  • Basic fluid properties: density and viscosity
  • Relationships between pipe diameter, velocity, and flowrate
Topics covered include:
  • measurement principles
  • fluid properties & flow phenomena
  • traceability & uncertainty
  • primary and secondary calibration
  • meter design & selection
  • differential producers
  • turbine meters
  • vortex meters
  • magnetic meters
  • Coriolis mass meters
  • critical flow
  • ultrasonic meters
  • troubleshooting of measurement equipment
  • sampling system design
  • prover design & applications
  • installation effects
  • ANSI/ISO flow standards
The discussion of meter hardware is kept at a basic level:
  • How does a meter work?
  • What are the "most likely" and "least likely" applications?
  • Emphasis on graphs rather than equations to communicate ideas
The CEESI technician staff provides a significant contribution in presenting the "nuts and bolts" details:
  • Measurement of pressure and temperature
  • Installing a meter
  • Data acquisition systems
The differences between the Fundamental course and the Advanced Flow Measurement courses include:
  • The courses overlap by about 10%-20% of the material. A student that signs up for both will be prepared for the second week after completing the first. There will be some repetition that serves as a review but much of the second week's material will be new.
  • Both courses will cover the same hardware, much greater detail is provided in the advanced course.
  • The fundamentals course includes a review of basic flow phenomena, the advanced course assumes this knowledge
  • A basic background in algebra, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics is helpful for the advanced course. This background is not required for the fundamentals course.
  • The advanced course will include development of working equations for some of the flowmeter types, equations are generally avoided in the fundamentals course.
  • The behavior of a particular meter technology is presented in a very general way in the fundamentals course. In the advanced course, the underlying physics are explored.
  • The fundamentals course includes more meter selection and meter comparison material.
While a comprehensive set of notes on CD is included with the coures, there is an additional $75 charge to receive a printed copy of the notes. Lunch is provided daily.
