Liquid Film Measurements in Multiphase Stratified Annular Flow Download PDF Download PDF
Tom Kegel,  6/1/1987, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Fluids Engineering Division, Spring Meeting

Abstract:
This paper reports on experiments to quantitatively classify the film behavior in an air/water multiphase flow. The data were taken in flow through a 79mm (3.1 in) diameter horizontal pipe. The range if superficial velocities were 5-30 [m/s] for the air and 0.001-0.015 [m/s] for the water. The flow regime was either annular or stratified with varying degrees of waviness present in both regimes. Local void fraction within the interface was measured using an electrical conductivity probe. Based on the results different measures of the film behavior are correlated to the input flowrates. The correlation forms are in agreement with those of other workers. Quantitative support for the flow pattern map of Mandhane is shown. The distribution of liquid within the pipe was quantified by taking data with the probe oriented at various angular positions. Integration of these data yields an estimate of void fraction.
